Despite the small size of the garden space behind the Russo family's home, the client desired a large lawn to give their children room to play. The lawn, together with a new deck, forms one large space carved out of greenery. To create the illusion that the garden is larger than it really is, the design focused on developing a thick, green edge created by multiple layers of vegetation that gives the eye a sense of depth. This obscures the boundaries of the garden, so that the green edge becomes visually linked with greenery in neighboring yards. The layered edge consists of fences covered with vines, a slope with shrubs, perennials and groundcovers and finally an inner layer with curved seating walls, trellises and a stair that leads to nowhere. This garden with its beautifully designed details and fragrant plants was a recipient of an AIA/SWO people's choice award and is a true sanctuary for its owners.
