Rainwater Residence
Location: Eugene, Oregon
From the roofs of the award-winning Rainwater Residence (designed with Eimar Boesjes), rainwater splashes on rotating granite boulders travels beneath steel grates into a constructed creek, and infiltrates into the earth. The rotating boulders occupy a terrace surrounded by a stainless-steel-faced retaining wall matching the building's roof. The 2000-lb. boulders are mounted on a custom pin and ball bearing assembly, and "float" so effortlessly over the steel grates they can easily be moved by children.
