Despite the small size of the garden space behind the Russo family's home, the client desired a large lawn to give their children room to play. The lawn, together with a new deck, forms one large space carved out of greenery. To create the illusion that the garden is larger than it really is, the design focused on developing a thick, green edge created by multiple layers of vegetation that gives the eye a sense of depth. The layered edge consists of fences covered with vines, a slope with shrubs, perennials and groundcovers and finally an inner layer with curved seating walls, trellises and a stair that leads to nowhere. This garden with its beautifully designed details and fragrant plants was a recipient of an AIA/SWO people's choice award and is a true sanctuary for its owners.
